There are lots of options in Yerington to get outside and stay fit.

Riding ATVs is a popular pasttime for many local residents

Bicycling

Find more than 70 cycling routes, maps, events, races, and club rides in Yerington with the MapMyRIDE app.
  • Smith and Mason Valley’s Figure 8 is a great rural Nevada ride on mostly low traffic roads through the farm and ranch lands of Smith and Mason Valleys via Wilson Canyon.
  • Less than 1000 feet of very mild elevation changes.
  • There is water and food in Yerington, Wellington, and Smith.

Geocaching

The Nevada Silver Trails have some of the most unique and interesting geocaching locations in Nevada. Some caches are located in or around state parks, Native American rock art sites, ghost towns, and other historic areas. Always follow any posted warnings and rules for visitors. Please tread lightly and practice “leave no trace” techniques. Respect private property.

Hiking

Recreation sites and other public lands offer many potential hiking opportunities, particularly for those interested in exploring the high desert environment. The nearby Wilson Canyon area in the Walker River corridor provides superb hiking and viewing opportunities.

Rock Climbing & Hunting

Yerington and Lyon County rock formations remain relatively undiscovered with low numbers of climbers but lots of climbing opportunities. Climbers can explore Wilson Canyon with its striking rock formations and geologic features adjacent to the Walker River. The Mason and Smith Valleys and surrounding high desert mountains offers rock hounds substantial hunting and collecting opportunities.
  • Mineral and semi-gem stones include azurite, malachite, copper and iron pyrite, traces of turquoise, peacock ore and quartz, jasper, agate and calcite.
  • Fossilized wood and the bones of prehistoric animals (mastodons, camels, and rhinoceros) have been found in Wilson Canyon.
  • Arrowheads, artifacts, and petroglyphs have also been discovered.
