Yerington is centrally located to the one of greatest concentrations of lakes and wildlife habitat areas in western Nevada. Licenses may be required for fishing and hunting.

  • Located about 11 miles northeast of Yerington, the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area(MVWMA) includes about 14,000 acres of fields, wetlands, and ponds that are home to birds, warm-water fish, and other wildlife.
  • Bass fishing in the MVWMA best in the spring in mid- to late March. Management emphasis is toward trophy, quality large-mouth bass angling, trophy trout angling, and put-and-take trout angling in North Pond, Bass Pond, and Crappie Pond.
  • Its high-desert habitat offers a range of seasonal hunting opportunities. Big game hunting includes deer and antelope.
  • Bird hunting includes duck, geese, chukar, dove and pheasant. The Mason Valley Hunt Club and Cottonwood Hunt Club are destinations for geese, quail, chukar, and pheasant hunting in a preserve environment.

Hunting

Walker River Resort, located in the Smith Valley, offers a sport shooting venue.

Birding

Birding opportunities are also available in the Wilson Canyon, Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Lahontan Recreation Area, and Carson Lake. These areas attract one of the largest concentrations of wintering Bald Eagles in Nevada.

Fishing

Located within a one-hour drive of Yerington, the East Fork of the Walker River is home to some of the area’s largest trout populations.
  • The stretch of stream most fly fishers utilize is from Bridgeport Reservoir downstream to the Nevada Border and then again over in Nevada about two miles downstream to the famous Rosaschi Ranch water.
